About CAML
The Canadian Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (CAML) is the Canadian branch of the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (IAML). Please see our CAML Constitution and Bylaws 2024
Our history at a glance
- Founded in 1971
- Successor to the Canadian Music Library Association (CMLA)
- First IAML meeting in Canada took place in 1975 in Montreal, followed by a 1994 meeting in Ottawa and a return to Montreal in 2012
- CAML’s annual meetings are held often in conjunction with Canadian University Music Society and the Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada
- In 1998, CAML inaugurated the Helmut Kallmann Award for excellence in music librarianship and archives work in Canada. The award is named after Dr. Helmut Kallmann, co-founder of CAML and chief of the music division at the National Library of Canada from 1970 to 1981
- The Quebec Chapter of CAML (SQACBM) was officially formed in 2008. Please see more at www.sqacbm.org
- CAML began publishing a quarterly newsletter in 1972. CAML Review, the Association’s journal, succeeded the newsletter in 2001 to reflect more accurately the scope of the profession. CAML Review added a peer-review section in 2016
- Goals: Support all aspects of music librarianship in Canada, including research and scholarly projects, and to cooperate with other national and international organizations concerned with all aspects of music

CAML/ACBM Board Members
President
Lucinda Johnston
Lucinda Johnston is a Faculty Engagement Librarian for Music, Drama, Linguistics and philosophy at the University of Alberta. Prior to entering the field of librarianship, she worked in early childhood music education and music therapy. She appreciates the opportunity to support her colleagues and the activities of CAML.
Treasurer
Tim Neufeldt
Tim Neufeldt is an instruction librarian and acting head at the University of Toronto Music Library. He is also an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Music, and teaches a graduate-level introductory research methods course. Tim’s background is in Western classical music, receiving a piano performance undergraduate degree in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada) before doing his MA and PhD in Musicology at the University of Toronto. In the process of writing his dissertation on early 18th-century opera, Tim discovered he liked the research process so much he went to library school and has loved library sciences ever since. Aside from music, one of Tim’s favourite activities is getting to be part of students’ academic journeys, and he considers it a true privilege to have a job supporting students’ and faculty’s research needs through one-on-one consultations and through embedded library instruction in partnership with courses offered at the Faculty of Music.
Secretary
Samuel Plato
Samuel Plato currently serves as a Learning & Instruction Support Librarian at the University of Manitoba. He is a graduate of the Master of Library and Information Studies program at the University of British Columbia and holds an undergraduate degree in music education from Appalachian State University.
Membership Secretary
Becky Smith
Becky Smith is the Music Librarian and Head of the Music Resource Centre at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where she provides collections, reference and instructional services to the School of Music. She has been active with CAML since 2011 and, prior to becoming membership secretary, has been a part of CAML conference program committees.
Communications Officer
Laura Reid
Laura Reid is currently a University of Calgary sessional liaison librarian, working with students in the School of Creative and Performing Arts and the Department of Art & Art History. She completed her Master of Information studies at University of Toronto’s iSchool in 2023. During her studies she did practicum work with Masckawcis Cultural College focusing on digital educational programming and with the Toronto International Film Festival Film Reference Library, completing the arrangement, description, and rehousing process for the collection of Toronto filmmaker Ingrid Veninger. In Spring 2023 Laura started work as student researcher to extend the inventory process of the Council of Prairies and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL) Indigenous Historical Publications Working Group. She has since joined the working group, currently finalizing the resulting inventory dataset for publication in the near future. Laura holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in violin performance, and has an established professional career as a musician and curator which she maintains in additional to her library work, with recent projects including the collaborative duo Who Cares? with flautist Jiajia Li, experimental quartet More Than Nothing, and serving as concertmaster for the Calgary Bach Society.
