Awards


The Canadian Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (CAML) presents three awards annually to library or archival students, researchers, professionals, etc. The Helmut Kallmann Award is given out every 5 years.

Cheryl Martin Presenter Award

CAML members interested in presenting at the 2024 conference are encouraged to apply for this award, which is open to:

  1. First-time presenters (who may be at any point in their career)
  2. Returning presenters who are early-career professionals (and who completed their education in the last five years)

 Award includes:

  • Publication of conference paper in the forthcoming issue of CAML Review
  • Up to $1000 for travel and accommodation expenses to attend the conference (all eligible receipt must be submitted)
  • Conference registration and banquet fees

Application Requirements:

  • One-page letter requesting to be considered for the award
  • Up-to-date CV
  • Statement expressing the applicant’s interest and experience in librarianship or the archival profession in the area of music

Applicants must not register for the conference until the results have been announced. Applicants must be members must in good standing and in the case of a returning presenter, must also be in the first five years of their career post-graduation from a Master of Library and Information Studies or Master of Archival Studies degree program or similar qualification (current employment is not a requirement).

Helmut Kallmann Award

The Award is named in honour of Dr. Helmut Kallmann, the pioneering Canadian musicologist, who was Chief of the National Library of Canada’s Music Division from its inception in 1970 to 1987, and a co-founder of the Canadian Music Library Association (the predecessor of CAML).

Call for Nominations:

The Canadian Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (CAML) extends an invitation for nominations of candidates for the seventh Helmut Kallmann Award. Named in honour of Dr. Helmut Kallmann, the pioneering Canadian music historian who was Chief of the National Library of Canada’s Music Division from its inception in 1970 to 1987 and a co-founder of the Canadian Music Library Association (the predecessor of CAML), the award aims to recognize distinguished service pertaining to library or archival science in the area of music, with a focus on music in Canada. Nominators and nominees are not required to be members of CAML.

Criteria for Selection
The award is open to librarians, archivists, academics, and others who, over the course of their career, have made outstanding contributions in one or more of the following areas relating to music in Canada:

  • music librarianship or archival theory or practice;
  • the preservation, digitization, and development of collections in music libraries and archival repositories;
  • cataloguing, description, and indexing activities that improve access to Canadian resources in all formats;
  • musicological and bibliographical research and documentation, including outstanding publications, as well as promotion and dissemination activities.

Candidates will be assessed on their achievements at the local, regional or national level.

Nominations will be reviewed by an independent committee, composed of at least three CAML members in good standing, appointed by the CAML President. The committee will select a single recipient, unless none of the nominees meets the selection criteria.

Process for Nomination

Nominations should consist of:

  • a signed statement by the nominator, outlining the achievements of the nominee as they relate to the above criteria;
  • other supporting documentation, including the curriculum vitae of the nominee. Letters of reference may also be appended;
  • contact information (address, telephone number, and e-mail address) of both the nominator and nominee.

The members of the 2022 Helmut Kallmann Award Committee were: Trevor Deck, Carolyn Doi, Robin Elliott, and Katherine Penner. The Committee presented the award at the 2022 CAML Conference.

The award is not open for applications in 2024.

First-time Attendee Award

This award supports CAML members who are library or archival students or individuals considering a career in librarianship or the archival profession in the area of music.

Applicants must be members in good standing.

Award includes:

  • Conference registration and banquet fees

Application Requirements:

  • Up-to-date CV
  • Letter requesting to be considered for the award and clearly articulating the applicant’s interest in a career in librarianship or the archival profession in the area of music

Applicants must not register for the conference until the results have been announced.

CAML Research and Professional Development Scholarship

This award supports research and/or professional development of CAML members with financial support of up to $1000. The scope of this award is broad and a wide range of submissions will be considered. Examples include:

  • Members seeking to top up funding for a current research project
  • Funding to attend conferences related to librarianship or the archival profession in the area of music
  • Support for a new research project
  • Any other professional development or research activities

To be eligible, applicants must be:

  • Members in good standing
  • Employed by a Canadian institution
  • Prepared to write an article on their research or professional development activity for publication in the forthcoming issue of CAML Review

Applications Requirements:

  • Letter of application clearly indicating the research or professional experience the applicant is seeking
  • Budget proposal
  • Up-to-date CV
  • Letter of support (preferably from a supervisor or senior staff member at the applicant’s institution)
