Committees
CAML Collections Committee meets several times per year to discuss the state of music collections in Canada, collaborate with groups and committees charged with library and archives collection-related goals, undertake meaningful projects, and foster research and scholarly communication concerning music collections in Canada.
Purpose:
• To liaise with committees and working groups with collections responsibilities, in particular the MLA Resource Sharing and Collection Development (RSCD) Committee
• To encourage/support research and scholarly communication with a focus on music collections
• To establish a forum for discussion and peer support addressing the technical and financial challenges of music collection development in Canada
• To collaborate on producing specific guides or documents (e.g. guide for the management of donations and donor relationships)
Membership:
The membership of 4-8 people will consist of CAML members in good standing as well as CAML President as ex officio. Members are appointed for two consecutive years through the recommendation of the Committee Chair and CAML President. The Committee Chair is appointed by the President as articulated in CAML's constitution.
2023-24 Membership
• Houman Behzadi (McGill University)
• Trevor Deck (Chair, University of Toronto)
• Carolyn Doi (University of Saskatchewan)
• Corinne Laverty (Queens University)
• Katherine Penner (University of Manitoba)
• Becky Smith (Memorial University)
• Brian McMillan (University of Western Ontario)
• Lucinda Johnston (University of Alberta)
Projects:
Canadian BIPOC Composers Shared Collecting Initiative
Building on Carolyn Doi (University of Saskatchewan) and Janet Hilts’ BIPOC Canadian Composers project in 2021, the CAML Collections Committee are embarking on a plan to systematically collect the works of BIPOC Canadian Composers in a collaborative and coordinated approach.
In 2022, CAML Collection Committee members populated a spreadsheet that lists websites and purchase links for each of the composers identified in the Doi/Hilts project. A subsequent call went out to Canadian Music Libraries to voluntarily commit to collecting the scores of select composers on the BIPOC Canadian Composers list. Ultimately, through this work, the Committee hopes to explore future possibilities for systematic collecting to achieve broader coverage of Canadian musical works.
